Your ideal cake design can come from anywhere .... not just a picture of another cake!
Inspiration! What are the details of the event, other than the cake?
What kind of flowers will be used?
What are your colours?
Do you love bling, lace or pearls?
Are your tastes modern or vintage, contemporary or cute?
Where will the event be held?
What else will be on the cake table?
Is it part of a display?
All of these questions can help guide your design and give you a great jumping off point. Many times people will come to me with a picture of a cake they want me to replicate, but we like to put our own touch on the design to make it uniquely yours. Part of the fun of cake decorating is to design a cake that is all your own. I like to take parts of a cake you like and rework them to fit the event and you.
Inspiration Board! Get your ideas together in the one place, whether that be a physical board, Pinterest or some other multi-media. When looking at inspiration, cut it out, save it, print it or even sketch it! Your inspiration board doesn't have to be perfect, it doesn't even need to look pretty, but getting something together will help you focus on what you are imagining….is there a common theme evolving? You may find that you don't like a particular idea after all, or, that it works perfectly!
Number of servings, dessert or with coffee? This is very important because some clients want a large four tier cake but only need to serve 20 people (I do create faux tiers in these instances). Or vice versa, wherein you only want a two tier cake, but need enough to serve 100+ people. Also, knowing a budget or at least a range can help in the design of a cake. Keeping in mind that the more you add to the cake the more the price will increase. I will provide you with an itemised quote so you know what each element costs then you can make the most informed decision going forward.
Lastly, have fun!
